When our customer lost both his mum and brother within a short period of time, he found himself facing an uncertain future. At 47 years old, having lived with his mum all his life, he suddenly had to navigate grief, change and the possibility of homelessness.
Before moving to Emery Place in February 2025, he was living in the family home he had shared with his mum for decades. Following her death, he was left struggling to cope with both his loss and his mental health.
The house itself presented significant challenges. There was no working kitchen, no laundry facilities and no central heating. The bed he slept on was more than 50 years old.
As someone who had spent his entire life with his mum, he suddenly found himself having to manage on his own at one of the most difficult periods of his life.
He also spoke about losing his brother to cancer and the impact that had on the family. He explained that he had an older adopted brother who had left home when he was 16. After his mum passed away, he used a computer at his local library to contact him and let him know what had happened. The family home was inherited by his brother, who planned to sell the property, meaning he would need somewhere else to live.
With his mental health suffering and limited experience of living independently, the prospect of losing his home created even more uncertainty about what the future might hold.
With support from the local council, a care package was put in place and he was given support hours to help him build confidence and develop everyday life skills. With support around him and a place he is proud to call home, he has been able to focus on rebuilding his confidence and looking ahead.
Having a home of his own has given him the opportunity to learn new skills and grow in confidence. He now does his own laundry, is learning to cook and has recently signed up to a computer course through a local men's club, where he can meet new people and continue developing his skills.
