A former railway depot in central Gloucester is making way for 113 affordable homes for local families.
Bromford, part of housing provider Bromford Flagship, acquired the southern phase of Gloucester’s Great Western Yard site earlier in 2025. Construction has now started on homes, which will make up just over a third of the total 315 homes to be built at the site off Great Western Road near the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
Adam Crompton, Senior Pre-Contract Manager at Bromford, said: “With work demolishing the disused buildings on this site under way, this is a fresh start for this site. It’s got a legacy of providing for the community as part of the rail infrastructure, and we’re proud to be part of its next steps.
“This sustainable new development will help a new community flourish and we’re very happy to offer local families somewhere affordable, safe and secure to live where they can thrive.”
Contractors David Horton Ltd and R2 Contracting additionally played a key role in clearing the former railway buildings and are also supporting the housebuilding.
The homes will be a mix of 72 for affordable rent, to be allocated to families on the local council waiting list and then let at around 80% of market rate. The other 41 will be for shared ownership, a hybrid of buying and renting which makes home ownership more accessible.
The project will make use of timber frames built off site and assembled on location, reducing construction time and improving energy efficiency. Each home will also be heated by air source heat pumps and come with EV chargers, and the flat blocks being constructed will also have solar panels fitted to the roofs.
Parking spaces for 125 cars and 234 bicycles, as well as a playground, will all be built alongside the homes.
Daniel Horton, Director at David Horton Contractors, said: “We’ve been working with Bromford for over 15 years and we’re really happy to be doing so again here with support from R2.
“Projects like these are always nice because we’re helping turn these old buildings back into useable space for these new homes, and I can’t wait to see them come together.”
Families will begin moving into the homes in autumn 2027, with completion on the homes estimated for spring 2029.
