An innovative housing development in Bristol will be 100% affordable after we secured the final homes on the site.
The Bonnington Walk development, located in Lockleaze which is a 15-minute drive from Bristol City Centre, provides a total of 185 homes built in partnership between Bristol City Council and Legal & General. We've now acquired the final 78 homes at the site after fellow housing association GreenSquareAccord had purchased 107 homes. All homes being built will now be available for rent or low-cost homeownership.
The new homes have been designed for maximum energy efficiency. Most of the homes will benefit from solar panels, helping to reduce future residents’ carbon footprint and energy bills; and air source heat pumps, a low maintenance and more environmentally friendly alternative to gas boilers. It means all 187 homes will have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A or B , which will minimise energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.
Our 78 homes are a mix of two- and three-bedroom homes, of which 58 have been earmarked for affordable rent and the remainder to be made available under our shared ownership scheme. The first four rental homes will be ready for customers to move into at the start of July.
Bromford’s Project Manager Robert Finch said: “This is a stunning development of high quality, energy efficient, affordable homes which will create a new sustainable community in Bristol. We’re delighted that our acquisition of 78 homes will provide both more affordable rental options for local people, as well as offering a route into home ownership through our shared ownership properties.
“We’re sure our customers will enjoy many happy years living in their new homes here.”
GSA have purchased 107 affordable homes at Bonnington Walk, with 55 available for social rent and 52 for shared ownership. GSA homes will be a mix of flats, two, three and four-bedroom houses and two-bedroom bungalows.
Half of all the rental homes at Bonnington Walk will be reserved for those on the Bristol City Council waiting list with a local connection to Lockleaze as part of the Lockleaze Local Lettings Policy. The first handover to rental customers is anticipated to take place next month. The remaining half will be allocated to people on the register from across the city.
Councillor Barry Parsons, chair of the Homes and Housing Delivery Committee at Bristol City Council, said: “Creating safe and healthy neighbourhoods, with affordable, high-quality homes is one of the council’s key priorities, and working with partners is key to helping us achieve these goals.
"I want to thank both GreenSquareAccord and Bromford for the role they are playing in bringing Bonnington Walk forward and for working with us in addressing local housing need."
Mike Nolan, Head of Development at GSA added: “We are proud to have worked in partnership with L&G, the local authority and fellow housing provider Bromford to secure new affordable homes in a city at the sharp end of housing affordability crisis.
“With an excellent energy performance specification as standard our customers will see benefits in low running costs at a time when it is needed the most."
