Watch out for open windows. Always use window restrictors where fitted, never leave windows wide open and unattended, and remember to close windows when you go out. Read our summer safety advice.
Winter can bring shorter days, cold temperatures, and icy conditions. A few simple precautions can help keep you, your home, and your neighbours safe this winter.
Staying safe in cold weather
- Keep your home heated to a safe temperature, ideally around 18–21°C
- Check the weather forecast regularly and prepare for snow, ice, or freezing conditions
- Remember, Bromford does not clear snow or ice, so clear paths around your home safely if you can
Around the home
- Ensure you have enough food, water, and essential supplies in case of bad weather
- Take care when walking outside - icy paths can be slippery
- In freezing conditions, heating boilers can stop working, these issues can often be resolved relatively easy
Neighbours
- Check in considerately, a quick call or text is often best. If visiting, keep it brief and outdoors where possible
- Respect boundaries, always ask before providing support and accept a “no” gracefully
- If someone needs essentials or help clearing paths, offer support safely without risking injury
- Look out for wellbeing, be alert to signs of illness or hypothermia, but avoid diagnosing, encourage professional support if needed
