With lighter days and milder weather, spring is a great time to open up your home and enjoy more time outdoors. But a few simple precautions can help keep you and your home safe this spring.

Around the home

  • As the weather improves, many people start opening windows more often If window restrictors  are fitted, check they are working properly before opening windows
  • Never leave windows wide open and unattended
  • When heading out, remember to close windows and keep valuables out of sight

Slips and trips outdoors

  • Damp weather over winter can lead to moss and algae building up on paths, steps and patios
  • Mossy surfaces can be very slippery, especially after rain
  • Regularly sweep or brush moss away to reduce the risk of slips and falls
  • Take care in communal areas and report any concerns if surfaces become unsafe

Battery safety in the home

  • Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in everyday items like phones, laptops, power tools and e-bikes
  • Always use the correct charger and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Avoid overcharging batteries or leaving them plugged in overnight
  • Do not charge batteries near flammable materials or on soft furnishings
  • If a battery becomes hot, damaged or swollen, stop using it and dispose of it safely

E-scooters and e-bikes

  • Store e-scooters and e-bikes safely and never block hallways, stairwells or communal exits
  • Charging should only take place in suitable areas and never in communal spaces
