Hate crime explained

A hate incident/crime is when someone behaves in a hostile or prejudiced way towards a person or property because of who they are or who they’re perceived to be. Intent doesn’t have to be proven. If the behaviour feels hostile to you, it matters, and it can be investigated.

  • Disability

Other protected characteristics in law include age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, and sex.

Examples of hate crimes

Hate can be verbal, written, online, or physical. It might include slurs, threats, damage to property, targeted noise or intimidation, or repeated harassment. Small incidents can escalate quickly — reporting early helps stop it.

You don’t need to prove intent, and you don’t have to be the direct target. Witness reports are important and can trigger early action.

If you experience online hate, screenshot it, report it to the platform, and tell us and/or the police.

How to report hate to us and what happens next

  • Tell us. Use our online form or call us. You can report if you’re the victim or a witness. You can report anonymously.

  • We listen and assess risk. Our community safety team reviews your report the same working day.

  • We act. This could include safety planning, gathering evidence (CCTV, noise app, statements), and working with the police and local partners.

  • We follow up. Your neighbourhood coach will stay in touch so you know what’s happening. We’ll agree next steps with you and set check‑in dates.

What happens next 

We won’t share your details without your consent unless the law requires it or there’s a serious risk of harm. You don’t need lots of evidence, just tell us what happened. Photos, messages or car reg numbers can help, but don’t put yourself at risk to get them.

Learn the signs. Make a plan. Act early.

Not sure it’s “serious enough”? If it makes you or others feel unsafe, log it and tell us. Keep a simple diary (dates, times, what happened, any witnesses). Save messages and screenshots.

How we tackle hate and antisocial behaviour

We take a zero‑tolerance approach to hate, nuisance and harassment across our communities. Our Community Safety Team and Neighbourhood Coach model work closely with the police, local councils and specialist services. Recent actions have included:

  • Injunctions and possession orders where serious harassment or risk persists.

  • Joint work with Environmental Health where noise devices and other targeted nuisance were used.

  • Fire and safety interventions in high‑risk cases.
