Bleeding a radiator is a simple and easy process that can improve the efficiency of your heating system. If you're experiencing issues with cold spots on your radiators or an overall decrease in warmth, bleeding the radiator may be the solution.

Step by step guide

Determine if your radiator needs bleeding. If it is warm at the bottom and cool at the top, it needs to be bled.

Important: you must only do this when the heating system is cold.

  1. Get a radiator bleed key and a piece of tissue or towel.
  2. Put the tissue underneath the valve.
  3. Insert the radiator bleed key and open the valve.
  4. Wait until the air has purged from the radiator and water starts to come out of the valve.
  5. Use the tissue to catch the water and turn off the valve.
  6. Repeat this process for all radiators in your home.
  7. If you have a combination boiler, you will need to re-pressurize it.
