Empowering Communities through the South Cerney Men's Shed
Loneliness can be a silent struggle. Recognising the need to combat this issue and provide a space for connection can change lives. One example of Bromford’s commitment to thriving communities is the South Cerney Men's Shed, a new community resource that is making a significant difference in the lives of local men.
The South Cerney Men's Shed opened its doors in April, offering a safe and welcoming environment where men can come together, engage in meaningful activities, learn practical skills, and forge friendships. This Men Shed initiative is part or a national network and was brought to South Cerney by Nicola Mann, a Bromford neighbourhood coach who noticed the lack of specific groups aimed at supporting men in the village.
Nicola explained:
My dad became poorly, so I looked in the community to see if I could find any groups for men to just go and have a coffee. They were all geared towards women and knitting and stuff, so I did some Google searches and found the men's sheds and thought I can set one up myself.
Nicola's determination led her to secure a shed, which was generously donated and installed in the garden area at one of Bromford’s community meeting rooms:
My dad passed away, so he didn't get to see it. However, I feel really proud that there is something there for those people that need it in our community, and that anyone can use it in the future.
Working hand in hand with Bromford and other key stakeholders, The Churn Project embarked on securing funding from various organisations. Graham Harris (from the Churn Project) explained how:
It's been great to see people using it over the past couple of months. They meet up once a week and have been getting involved in some community projects, like making some planters for the local school. It's going to benefit so many people and help them feel a bigger part of the community in South Cerney.
Bromford's commitment to building stronger communities shines through with support of initiatives like the South Cerney Men's Shed. By donating the land for the project and providing crucial technical expertise, Bromford’s partnership with local organisations has created a sustainable resource that enriches the lives of community members.
As the South Cerney Men's Shed continues to thrive, it not only enhances the lives of its participants but also fosters a sense of belonging and community pride. Through collective efforts, Bromford, The Churn Project, and generous supporters have made South Cerney a place where men can combat loneliness, learn practical skills, and make a lasting difference in their neighbourhood.
