New supported housing scheme opens its doors in Telford

A fire ravaged Walsall pub which lay empty for almost a decade is being transformed into a new multi-million pound supported housing development.
The former Bulls Head pub in Bloxwich closed down in 2007 and was devastated by an arson attack in 2011 causing part of the first-floor and interior walls to collapse. For a period it was poised to become another pub, and then a supermarket, before Bromford acquired the site and is in the latter stages of completing a two-storey supported housing scheme called Saxon Court.
As part of a £1.5m investment in the area, Saxon Court is being built by Bromford’s in-house construction team and with the final roof tiles being added the new facility is scheduled to open for customers by the end of October. The 14 self-contained one bedroom apartments will offer adults living with mental health conditions the opportunity to live in their own home and also includes a communal hub, kitchen area, site office, car parking and landscaped gardens.
Bromford has been working in partnership with the commissioning team at Walsall District Council after a need for this type of supported housing accommodation was identified in the area.
Saxon Court represents Bromford’s latest MyPlace development which is its new model of supported housing for adults with long term conditions such as a learning disability or a mental health condition. There is no revenue support from local authorities and no grant available from the HCA (Homes and Communities Agency) and therefore MyPlace represents a high-quality alternative to residential care as well as providing significant cost savings to local authorities.
MyPlace manager Catherine Ashley said: “Bromford want to provide the right home for every customer and MyPlace offers people the opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment where they can take control of their own life, reduce their dependency and ultimately live more independently.
“It’s really exciting to see Saxon Court reaching the final stages of the build and with a bus route, shops and restaurants close by, we feel sure customers will quickly become part of the local community.”
