First community event at St Matthews Road development opens doors for residents.

Residents who moved into new affordable housing in St Matthews Road in Telford – a previously rundown wasteland area – have enjoyed their first community event at the Lifelong Learning Centre right next door.

Serena Baker from Bromford said: “We have a good relationship with the centre which is literally on the doorstep of this development, so we thought it would be a great idea to get our customers together - a mix of single people and families ranging in age from 18 to 55 – and give them access to the opportunities on offer: a weekly job club with free access to a computer room; information on volunteering and learning and a café which offers a place to meet up with neighbours - both other Bromford residents and from the surrounding area.”

The day was well attended and people were able to access a range of information including insurance options, job opportunities from the notice board and ideas around what they could do in their community. Serena continued: “Whilst we were there, we put one customer in touch with the local parish relief fund and she has received a grant of £250 towards carpeting her new home!”

One resident, Gemma said: “I didn’t know the area that well when I moved in so it was nice to go and see what’s on offer and I was able to get some information when I was looking for a job.” Another resident, Austin, said: “It was really helpful. I got advice on house insurance on the day and now go in every Monday to do an English lesson. The café’s great too as you can feed your child for just £1!”

Since the event, customers now frequently pop in and the facilities are also used to hold social gatherings. Bromford colleagues are regularly on site and have committed to repeat this on future new schemes where there is a community centre in the local area.

Resident Melvin summed up: “It feels like a real community. We know everyone well and help out where we can.”
