Adam from Burntwood is setting up his own welding business. Pretty impressive when you consider he’s only just turned 25 and has battled all his life with a spinal disability and constant rejections when seeking work.

Here’s his story:

“I have always been interested in welding and used to do a bit at my grandad’s place. I bought a classic mini and rebuilt it from nothing, giving it a new engine and parts. That’s what started me thinking about setting up a welding business.

“I’ve never been able to get a job. It’s not as if I haven’t tried but I have always been put down. On one application form, I ticked a box to say I’m disabled and was told there were too many applicants so I reapplied without ticking the box and got through to interview only to be told I wouldn’t be taken on as I’m disabled. It puts you on a downer. My Dad has his own business and I’ve always had an urge to have mine.

“It was only when I went to one of Bromford’s drop-in places that they suggested I go self employed. I hadn’t thought I could really do it but I was set on the right track and have been put on permitted work for a year [Adam is in receipt of ESA benefit] to see how I get on.

“My disability means that I have no control from the hips down. I’ve had 52 operations to try and keep me on my feet. I am keeping myself motivated to continue as I want to build a good reputation. I’ve done some work but it’s slow going.

“When you have a lifelong condition, you know that you have to keep on trying. I’ve always been outgoing and don’t let my disability hold me back. If I can’t do something, I will try. If there’s something you want to do, you need to go for it and not be afraid to ask for help.

“It would be nice to come off ESA benefit and pay for everything myself one day and to have my own pad. I just need to get my name out there!”
