Royal Court, a flagship care home for older people, has received outstanding feedback in a recent bout of surprise inspections, including the catering team retaining a five star award from the local council.

The unique scheme, managed by leading care provider Bromford Support, received visits from Environmental Officers of Cheltenham Borough Council as well as Care Quality Commission inspectors. Visiting the Fiddlers Green Lane home, Council officers gave the kitchen and catering team a glowing report for providing quality freshly cooked food in a safe and clean environment. Officers also noted the team's excellence in catering for the specialist needs of residents, including those with diabetes and alzheimers.

Rivalling the likes of Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey, Royal Court's Head Cook Marcia Nobe runs a tight ship when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness in her kitchen. She says; "I'm incredibly proud to have retained the five star hygiene certificate. The cleanliness of the kitchen is extremely important to me, especially when I know I'm cooking for vulnerable residents. "

Marcia also believes that a top dining experience isn't just about the cleanliness of the kitchen. "I aim to provide a varied menu for all the Royal Court residents to choose from, as well as the option of taking meals in a dining room or in their own independent living apartments.

"We aim to provide independence for all our residents by giving them options and choices, while ensuring they know they can rely on the team to support them."

Not only did the haute cuisine and top catering facilities receive recognition, but the scheme also received a fantastic report from the Care Quality Commission. The report, released at the end of April, detailed the excellent level of care provided.

Focusing on areas such as welfare, respect, dignity and safeguarding, the report details how Royal Court meets a number of key standards including the provision of a safe environment and well-managed care plans.

Dorry Evans, whose father is a resident of Royal Court, believes the service provided by Bromford is one of the best available. She says; "My father particularly relishes his independence in his own flat and enjoys the peace and quiet this affords. He gets on well with the staff and says that everyone treats him with respect and no-one speaks down to him.

"Our experience of Royal Court has been very positive and my father has been happy living here. As his family we have had peace of mind that he is well cared for and supported in his later years."

Julie Galkowski, Business Manager for Bromford Support, believes that Royal Court is set apart from other care homes. She says; "What makes Royal Court so special is that residents are encouraged to remain as independent as possible while still knowing they have 24-hour support.

"All flats have separate bedrooms, kitchen facilities and living rooms. Residents are encouraged to bring their own furniture and belongings to make it their own home.  Couples or friends need not be separated as they can stay together in double bedroom accommodation.

"Our values state that residents should have choice and independence whilst not compromising on safety and the care offered.  Six monthly reviews of the care plan takes place with residents, relatives and professionals as well as bi-monthly residents meetings.
