Eco-friendly housing repairs team members have won an award for showing that they are tuned in to green thinking - and green action.

And now they are also tuned in to their favourite radio stations- thanks to the wind-up radio they chose as their depot prize after winning one of Bromford's Green Apple awards.

The award went to Bromford Living's repairs team south, based at the social housing group's Elliott Road depot in Cirencester, Gloucestershire - for their eco-friendly approach to waste management.

Tons of unwanted metal, wood, TVs, fridges and other items are brought to the depot when customers leave them behind in Bromford properties or neighbourhoods.

The waste is split into different stream and - wherever possible -taken away by bulk recycling collectors or passed on to local charities and used again.

To achieve this level of recycling means colleagues across all teams, including repairs, empty homes and landscaping, have to think green as they deliver services.

Head of repairs Richard Hicks said: "It's taken some time and effort but colleagues now look at every opportunity to recycle and even re-use all sorts of items - ranging from grass cuttings to old television sets.

"Colleagues in the empty homes team are working well with local charities. Some furniture and household items are now donated to those in need, rather than disposed of through recycling. These achievements have all been made possible with the commitment from colleagues to change the way they work."

The team's waste management practices have been developed as a direct need to reduce the waste generated that goes to landfill. In this way, the team has become compliant with the waste regulations, environmental legislation and the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) regulations.

Green Apple awards recognise and celebrate some of the practical ways where customers and colleagues are making a difference and having a positive impact on the environment.
