Bromford has purchased an NHS site in Telford after tabling multi-million pound plans for a brand new housing development, it has been revealed.

If approved, the £2.6m supported housing proposals would help to offer an independent home to people that are currently unsuitably housed. Bromford, which owns almost 3,000 homes across Telford and Shropshire, recently purchased the unoccupied piece of land from the NHS on Haygate Road in Wellington. The site is adjacent to the former Wellington Cottage Care Hospital.

Under the proposals, which have recently been submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council, a MyPlace supported housing development with 14 self-contained one bedroom apartments would be built alongside and additional four three-bedroom homes for affordable rent.

The MyPlace site would give adults with learning disabilities or mental health needs the opportunity to live in their own home and also includes a communal hub, kitchen area, site office, car parking and landscaped gardens. It would represent Bromford’s third MyPlace development in Telford with one completed in Little Dawley in 2018 and another one in Donnington, called Orchard Place, opening in August 2017.

Bromford has been working closely with commissioning specialists from Telford & Wrekin Council and confirmed that there was a need for a third MyPlace scheme in the county to meet demand.

The supported housing aspect of the site would meet demand in the following areas:

  • People in long stay hospital placements
  • Young people going through transition from children’s to adult services in need of accommodation
  • Range of people in out-of-county placements that need bringing back
  • People already living in the community but are failing in their current accommodation.

New business manager Josie Bishton said: “We are really pleased to have exchanged contracts with the landowner on this site which is in a very desirable location close to the centre of Wellington with its vast array of shops, restaurants, parks and leisure centres.

“As one of the main housing providers in Shropshire, this is an area we know well and where we are really keen to invest in. This 18 home development will not only provide affordable housing for local people but also give vulnerable people the opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment where they can take control of their own life, reduce their dependency and ultimately live more independently.”
