Bromford receives planning permission for new retirement living scheme in Stourport

Planning permission was granted by Wyre Forest District Council in mid August for our flagship retirement living scheme in Stourport-on-Severn.
The development on Vernon Road is on the site of the old Stourport primary school and using part of the existing school house building will offer 60 independent, high-quality retirement living apartments for older people aged over 55. This exciting new project will include many facilities such as a café, hairdressers, gym, village hall and activity area surrounded by attractive gardens within a short stroll into the centre of Stourport. Customers will live in a safe and secure environment with on-site care provision for those who need additional support but want to remain in their own home.
We are hoping that our first residents will move in Spring 2018.
Penny Downing, director of development said: “This scheme is specifically aimed at providing affordable rent and shared ownership accommodation for older people over the age of 55. Shared ownership is a great way to part buy, part rent, thus allowing people to access our scheme who might not otherwise have been able to afford an outright sale option. We will be offering a range of one and two-bedroom modern, attractive apartments in a scheme where there will be 24 hour on-site support and additional care available as and when customers feel they need more help.

Currently 9.3 million households are headed by a person over retirement age. By 2033, this is expected to increase to 13 million which is an increase of 40 per cent on figures for 2008.
The government and local authorities see the benefit of retirement living from many angles including affordability over residential care and freeing up family housing and is becoming a preferred choice for some people. To put some figures on the supply across England, retirement living developments account for only 10.5% of older people’s independent living accommodation (56,000 units of 533,000) and only 26% of that is for sale (15,000 of the 56,000). So, to summarise, for an older population in excess of 10m people, there are currently 15,000 retirement living units for sale across England.
