Leading social business Bromford are calling for donations of clothing, blankets and sleeping bags to support a rough sleeping awareness event in November, as homelessness in the UK continues to increase.
A team of support workers, as well as local PCSOs, will be visiting homelessness hotspots around Nuneaton on 29th November, to give advice, support and donations to those sleeping rough.
The team will then sleep rough in the town centre themselves, with the hope of raising awareness around the issues rough sleepers face, and to see how local community react to the homeless.
Working with the Salvation Army and a collective of seven local churches, all of which are part of the region’s ‘Night Shelter Programme’ , the team will also be recording their night on social media sites such as Twitter and Youtube.
Terri Boffin, a senior support worker for Bromford and the organiser of the project, believes the problem of homelessness is increasing in Warwickshire and that more organisations need to work together to help those at risk.
She said; “In the current economic climate, more and more people are experiencing hardship and having no choice but to resort to desperate measures, from turning to a friends sofa through to bedding down on the pavement for a night. The plight of the homeless will only grow.
“We’ve organised this event to raise awareness of the issues in our area, support the local homelessness charities and attempt to experience some of the hardship people face each night.”
Bromford already provide advice, support and signposting through their adult offenders floating support service, which has supported a number of street homeless customers.
Despite calling for donations and sleeping rough themselves, Terri’s team knows they will see only a fraction of the problem; “Sleeping in the high street for one night will never fully allow us to appreciate what life would be like if we had no place to call home.
“We all need to take notice of the issue to be able to make any real change."
Bromford Support would like the local community to show their support by donating unwanted coats, scarves, hats, footwear, socks, other clothing items, blankets and sleeping bags. Unfortunately, the team cannot accept underwear or very dirty, soiled or tatty clothing.
The team are also looking for local supermarkets and businesses to support the project with items such as food and bottled water.
To make a donation call Terri Boffin on 02476 373 603, text 07912 275 265 or email firstname.lastname@example.org, and the team will be happy to arrange a collection.
