Bromford Northants team restructure delivers better services

Bromford Support in Northamptonshire has restructured its services and is helping 2,000 more customers than a year ago, offering reduced waiting times and more effective solutions.

Introducing tiered services and around 50 drop-in centres across the region in the last 12 months, the team can provide more tailored support and better outcomes for peoples’ individual needs.

The team, based around Daventry, East and South Northants and Wellingborough, provide light touch through to intensive support or something in between for people and welcome everyone, regardless of circumstances or whether they are existing customers. New partnerships have formed with several organisations including Sure Start Children’s Centres, community centres and libraries which have made the support services more accessible to local communities giving people a single point of access.

Sarah Wilson, service manager for the team of 25 said: “We are working smarter. The other major factor in our success is that we have seen a huge increase in our support workers using social media to help challenge stigma associated to welfare and raise awareness of what we do.

“We all are incredibly passionate about helping people to be the best they can be and regularly contribute to BBC Radio Northants debate #Northantshour every Thursday between 8-9pm so we can keep local support high on the agenda.”

Case studies:

Support worker, James Clarke, explains how he has recently helped two local people in Northampton.

“A man in his mid to late 30’s was referred onto us from The Hope Centre for the homeless in Northampton. I took some details and walked with him to the Borough Council where I supported him in presenting himself as homeless. As a result the council helped him with a bond to obtain deposit for private rented accommodation.

“I then helped him to ring around local estate agents and to look on the internet for private letting options. We found a suitable property and I supported the gentleman to arrange a viewing and get the bond in place. The total support took three sessions.

“The second case was a 45-year old woman who was suffering from physical health issues including asthma which was being made worse by mould in her property. I contacted environmental health who visited the property and deemed it unsuitable.

“After I contacted the Borough Council, the lady was rebanded as high priority and got moved to appropriate housing where she is now settled. This was completed over five sessions.”

Paul Woodroof, support worker in one of 16 drop-ins across the South Northants area, explains how he was able to help a man who had been suicidal to change the way he thinks.

The man, in his 40’s, had attended the Brackley drop-in after missing the deadline for sending in his ESA (Employment and Support Allowance sickness benefit) medical form. This needed acting on urgently as his benefit could have been sanctioned so Paul helped him to fill in the form and send it off. He has since received confirmation that he does not need to attend a medical as the benefit will remain the same. This was a huge relief to him as his last benefit review was not so successful and ended after a lengthy appeal process which caused a lot of anxiety and suicidal thoughts and he had to increase his attendance to his GP during this time.

Despite suffering with agoraphobia this man now feels comfortable enough to attend the drop-in when he needs help. This has helped him to deal with this issue before it got out of hand where he would most likely have experienced another severe dip in his mental health that would have required further input from his GP or mental health services.
