MyPlace helps Abbi to flourish

Living at home with her family, Abbi didn’t go out much, she had no friends outside of her family meaning that her social life was pretty non-existent. Abbi’s mum was full-time carer and did everything for her, including all the cleaning and cooking around the home… Abbi had never had to learn how to carry out basic household tasks.

Abbi has been living at Samuel Place in Redditch since August 2016 after being referred to the scheme by her social worker and her transformation has been incredible. Here, Jacci Lea – Bromford housing enabler, takes up the story.

The last year has seen a massive change in Abbi. Since moving to the scheme her confidence has grown so much, and as she has involved herself in more activities and she enjoys spending time in the community hub at the scheme where she chats to her friends.

She works really closely with the care staff and has built up fantastic relationships with them which has given her the confidence to try different things and learn new skills.

Abbi enjoys getting involved in arts and crafts sessions, bingo and going to the weekly disco – the next thing she’s excited about trying is swimming. She also has dedicated time with her carers where she’s learning how to cook and is starting to build her understanding of healthy eating and lifestyles.

Abbi spends a lot of quality time with her family too - doing fun things like shopping and going out for meals together. And they have said how happy they are to see her developing and building new friendships - they can’t believe how much she has learned and how she is now looking after her own home.

Abbi is a huge butterfly fan and the decoration in her flat reflects this. There are butterflies on the curtains, her bedding and on the walls. I think this reflects Abbi’s time at Samuel Place so far where she has definitely transformed and is flourishing with every passing day.
