What to do if you smell gas in your home

If you suspect a gas leak in your house, it is important to act quickly. Find out what you should do if you smell gas or your gas leak detector sounds in this video. The emergency gas number is 0800 111 999.


*What to do if you smell gas*

*Step 1: Turn off the gas at the meter.*

“If you do have a smell of gas and you need to turn it off at the meter, we’ll do it like this.”

“This is your control valve, you turn it so as you can’t turn the valve anymore, the valve handle will be across the pipe and there will be some tape to show you and to identify, how to turn off the gas valve.”

“If you live in a flat and you have a smell of gas, then you may have an additional emergency control valve, which needs to be turned off like this.”

“It’s turned so as the handle is across the pipe work, once you’ve turned your gas off at your meter you will need to call 0800 111 999 *0800 111 999* They will then advise you to open your windows, to extinguish any naked flames and not to operate any electrical switches.

*The next steps: Open all windows, extinguish any naked flames, and do NOT operate any electrical switches*

“They will then send out their own engineer to check the safety of your gas supply, you’ll also then call Bromford *0330 1234 034* who will then send out our own gas contractor to rectify any issues you have with your gas supply.”
