How to save water in your home

Water is an important part of our daily lives. Making just a few small adjustments to how you use water could save you some money.

You can do many things to help save on the amount of water you are using. Here are some top tips to get you started.

Running taps

Don't let it run - When washing or brushing your teeth, don't leave the tap to run. Doing this can save over 5 litres of water a minute.

A dripping hot tap wastes energy. In one week, it can waste enough energy to fill half a bath. If you have a dripping tap, make sure you report a repair.

Boiling the kettle

Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).

Washing food and vegetables

Wash vegetables in a bowl rather than under a running tap.

Washing the dishes and clothes

Only use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher – this cuts out unnecessary washes in between.

Use a jug for drinking water

In need of a drink? Keep a jug of water in the fridge so you don't need to keep re-using the tap.

Water saving gadgets

Save when flushing

Reduce the volume of water in your cistern with a free water displacement device, it will save water each time you flush. You can get one of these from your water provider.

Save when watering the plants

Use a water butt. Having a water butt in your garden can help save water usage in your garden. Water butts can fill enough water for the use of 25 watering cans. You can buy a water butt from most hardware stores.
