Kate didn’t always do well at school, but from a young age she had a real interest in carpentry and ‘hands on’, practical work. After becoming pregnant at 16, she had to put her plans on hold for a while so she could raise her family.
A few years later, Kate decided to go back to college to get her level 2 qualification in site carpentry. She wanted a job working on building sites but the hours were unsociable and with a young family it wasn’t possible. It was then that she met Katie Hunter, a Bromford skills coach. Katie suggested that she started volunteering as this would allow her to be flexible with her time and would also give her some valuable work experience.
Kate is now volunteering at the college where she studied for her qualification. She’s helping carpentry students to learn whilst working towards making her dreams of being employed on site a reality.
