Volunteers brushing up Swindon support scheme.

A team of volunteers from local businesses has come together to give a new lease of life to a support scheme on Calvert Road, which provides a safe environment for adults with mental health issues.

The 10-flat scheme, which sees social business Bromford providing support to help residents stay independent, is getting more than just a lick of paint with some residents getting brand new furniture and appliances.

Bromford took over the scheme in May 2013 and found some customers did not have the basics such as a bed, sofa or washing machine, with the flats themselves needing an urgent renovation.

Bromford support worker Corrina Rose approached LoveSwindon, an initiative from Citifaith Church aiming to make Swindon a better place for everyone and encourage community spirit through volunteering.

Corrina said; “Since we first took over the support at Calvert Road, I’ve been building some excellent relationships in the local community to help achieve a positive change for the residents.

“I’ve been working for a few months to make sure our customers had furniture items they needed to start managing homes, but the final thing was a lick of paint. This is when I got in touch with LoveSwindon.”

LoveSwindon approached building society Nationwide to support the project with volunteers and local businesses around Swindon have provided tools and paint. Bromford support workers then made contact with local businesses who provided breakfast and lunches for the 30-strong makeover team.

Some of the residents of Calvert Road have been in their flats over 15 years without any decoration, and so Corrina thinks the transformation has been amazing.

“This whole project has been life changing for our customers, they’re already saying how they finally feel they have a home. A few of the residents are also now interested in exploring volunteering work themselves, which will be great for them.

“From my perspective I have been overwhelmed and encouraged with how people in the local community are getting involved – working together we can achieve amazing results.  The atmosphere has been amazing and we’re making such a difference – Swindon certainly is a community to be proud of!”
