Bromford exchanges in readiness for first MyPlace schemes

We have exchanged on two pieces of land for our innovative new model of supported housing: MyPlace, for adults with a long-term mental health condition or learning disability.

MyPlace has been specifically designed with both customers’ and commissioners’ needs in mind and to provide a safe and secure home for life. The aim of MyPlace is about raising aspirations by providing someone with a learning disability or mental health needs the chance to take control of their life, live independently, reduce dependency and harness opportunities.

Josie Bishton, new ventures manager said: “If you’re responsible for commissioning services then you probably feel stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. With budgets being squeezed and ever-increasing expectations on service delivery, it must seem like a never-ending balancing act.

“We don’t require a grant subsidy and so are not tied to funding rounds or external timescales which means we can move forward much more quickly than other providers. This represents a less expensive alternative to residential care and could mean an overall saving to local authorities.”

The two new schemes will be in the Kings Norton area of Birmingham and Redditch in Worcestershire. Start-on-site work is expected to be around October once planning permission is approved.

Designed and built by Bromford’s experienced in-house construction team, MyPlace will provide well-appointed, self-contained one-bedroom apartments. The model enables a specialist housing and community champion to be on site for over 18 hours a week, assisting customers with tenancy, benefit and care issues – including support to organise repairs and help managing visitors.

MyPlace has been developed to fully respond to the personalisation agenda. The housing and community champion will be on hand to coordinate multiple care and support providers to ensure the customer receives a coordinated approach in the delivery of their care and support.

A community hub with a lounge, meeting room and kitchen not only provides a social area for customers living in the scheme, but it also provides facilities to deliver training, employment advice and activities to both customers and the wider community. This proactive support is the key to helping customers identify and achieve their aspirations, whilst reducing ongoing dependency.
