The Paralympic legacy is to be reignited as popular accessible sport event ‘Solihull Gets Active’ returns to the town after its success in 2012.
This year’s disability sport and activity day will take place on Thursday 5 September at the North Solihull Sports Centre, with the opening ceremony beginning from 10.00am. Booking is essential and registration is now available at: http://www.enable-solihull.org.uk/events.html
The event is set to be opened by local sports celebrity and boxing champion Wayne ‘Mad Dog’ Elcock and the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Joe Tildesley. Organisers are hoping to continue the fantastic work of last year’s event, encouraging the local disabled community to become more active, while continuing the legacy of the 2012 Paralympic Games.
Led by local organisations; Enable Solihull, Bromford, Solihull Community Housing and Solihull Council, the day will see a host of events including wheelchair basketball, archery, fencing, martial arts, table tennis, multisports, yoga, zumba, aqua aerobics, bhangra burn-off and an information zone.Local sports charities and clubs will also be on hand with demonstrations and information.
Local charity Enable Solihull pulled the partner organisations together last year to celebrate the Paralympic torch relay and raise awareness of disability sports in the area.
Kay Donaghy of Enable Solihull said: “There is a great willingness from sports clubs and coaches to provide inclusive sports and activities and we are hoping to build on the success of last year’s event.”
Greg Lakin of Solihull Community Housing added: “The Paralympic spirit is alive and strong in Solihull so this is the ideal opportunity for adults with any type of disability or health issue to find out how much is actually available to them.”
Helen Horsfall, service manager at Bromford said: “This is a great event for adults to come together with any form of disability, to take part in many different sport activities on the day but also to find out more about what is available and accessible to them locally in Solihull.
“Thanks to Wayne Elcock for supporting this event, it’s great he’s so passionate about involving all abilities in sports across the borough.”
