Golden Hoglet win for Communications Specialist

A Communications specialist from Bromford, one of the UK’s leading social businesses providing affordable homes and specialist support, has taken gold at national PR awards the “Golden Hedghogs”.
Jarrod Williams, aged 23 from Mallen Drive, Oldbury, beat off stiff competition to take home the Golden Hoglet award, given to the best in-house communicator under 30. Held at the Emirates stadium in London on Thursday (21st March), the Midlands PR sat alongside fellow Hedgehog shortlistees including giants McDonalds, Santander and Frank PR.
Part of the Bromford Communications team for just over a year, Jarrod has worked tirelessly with his colleagues to transform Bromford’s communications output, looking at the increasing shift to digital communications as the norm. Managers noted Jarrod’s strong work ethic, always striving for innovation and placing Bromford as not only a leader in the housing sector, but as a rival to businesses such as Virgin.
The Awards, known as the ‘world’s spikiest communication awards’ and organised by leading PR website prmoment.com, saw entries judged by some of the UKs leading communications professionals who looked for “individuals who could show an ongoing and sustained commitment to delivering best practice while showing a creative and innovative approach to external communications.”
Some of Jarrod’s most recent achievements saw Bromford receive blanket coverage across the Midlands for their welfare reform campaign, informing customers of upcoming housing benefit changes, and reached a combined audience of 23million people with Bromford’s contact centre logging more than 4200 telephone conversations with customers on welfare reform in last five months, smashing expectations.
Jarrod also launched Bromford onto national news positioning the social business as the go to people for examples of the success on the government's work program initiative, despite being a relatively small contractor.
However judges noted more than Jarrod’s focus on PR innovation and campaign successes, stating what really stood out was his relationship and passion for his work and team, his voluntary efforts as a PR and Social Media officer for the Air Cadets, and the time he spends sharing his experience with media students at Birmingham City University.
Judges said they “were impressed by this energetic, enthusiastic and committed individual, a great team player who has taken time to use his skills not just in work but also in a voluntary capacity with the Air Cadets.”
Jarrod graduated from Birmingham City University with a 1st in 2011, taking on a number of unpaid and paid internships with some of the midlands biggest agencies including Willoughby PR, McCann PR and Grayling, before gaining a fulltime position with Bromford in January 2012.
Jarrod, who is no stranger to awards having won the 2011 Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Student of the Year, said: “It’s an honour to be shortlisted amongst national brands such as Santander and McDonalds. I’ve only been in the industry for a short time so it’s particularly significant.
“I’ve had incredible support from colleagues leading up to and during the event and had so many good wishes and messages of congratulations from people within the industry. I’d like to thank Bromford for giving me such a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills.”
Despite having a host of notable achievements to his name, including taking the top spot in two categories of the Air Cadet Organisations Media awards, Jarrod still felt the nerves while waiting for his categories announcement. “I was incredibly nervous right up to when my name was announced – it took a few minutes to sink in and I was speechless, something that’s never happened before! I’m beaming.”
