Bromford's CEO backs campaign led by digital champion Martha Lane-Fox to get every UK home online at NHF conference today.

Mick Kent and Bromford executive director Philippa Jones gave the campaign their enthusiastic support after hearing the lastminute.com founder argue the case for ending digital exclusion.

Ms Lane-Fox was one of the keynote speakers yesterday (Monday) on the opening day of the National Housing Federation annual conference in Birmingham's ICC.

Mick and Philippa both described the Race Online 2012 rally call as a highlight so far of the event, which draws together hundreds of affordable housing professionals for networking and debate on big issues facing the sector.

Mick said: "Martha's bold target is that - with our help - everyone in the UK will have online access in one form or another by the start of the Olympics next year. And we certainly support that ambition.

"It's a big ask. According to Martha, there are nine million or so people in the UK who don't have an internet connection
"That means in one way or another that they are socially disadvantaged in one way or another.

"She was saying they could probably be £200 a year - that's £4 a week - better off if they had web access and that's without adding up all of the other disadvantages of being online."

Philippa agrees, stressing the advantages for younger people who are missing out if they don't have a web connection at home.
"We possibly tend to assume that all young people are online whereas this is not the case. Some kids are not and if they not they are definitely missing out when it comes to their school studies. It's a major, major disadvantage," said Philippa

.
"I particularly liked her push to say let's all of us give our commitment to spend the extra hour that all of us gain when the clocks go back in October sitting with someone who is currently excluded and help them to get online."
