Housing high-flyer Dr Fiona Underwood has joined the Bromford group board, which helps to formulate business strategy and plays a crucial role in overseeing performance.

She is already well-known to Bromford through her strategic-level work with Tribal Consulting and now with three other partners has set up Altair Ltd - a leading edge housing and regeneration consultancy.

Highly knowledgeable and very well connected within the housing sector and outside it, her special expertise is in governance, business improvement and mergers.

Fiona said: "I know Bromford is ambitious to be recognised as one of the top three affordable housing providers and I believe my experience in developing thought leadership and innovative new products, services and working practices will enable me to support the Bromford leadership team in delivering our strategy and achieving those ambitions."

At Tribal, she had full responsibility for the major public sector consulting division, Housing Regeneration and Local Government, with a turnover of £30m and 240 consulting staff.

Welcoming her to the board, Bromford executive director Philippa Jones said: "I know this appointment will be viewed very positively by the regulator and by our lenders as Fiona has a strong reputation and would be seen as an asset to any housing association board.

"Her special expertise is in governance, business improvement and mergers, but she also brings a broad and deep knowledge of the sector in general, which will help with our benchmarking and identifying where we can learn from best practice."

Fiona has also been a senior business advisor with the leading accountancy and management consultancy KPMG, and held various roles with the Confederation of British Industry and British Aerospace.

Fiona has a doctorate from the University of London, a BTEC in management studies from Brunel University and a first-class honours degree in aircraft production from the University of London. She really does know how to build an airplane!
